About Pakistan Coast Guards:

The Pakistan Coast Guards (PCG) are a unique combination of land-based and maritime forces operating under one command. In addition to equipment for use on land, it also includes ships and other maritime vessels in its portfolio. The army is able to conduct operations both on land and in the sea thanks to this special mix. This unique alliance sets PCG apart from other law enforcement and security organizations stationed along the coast or conducting operations there, on land or at sea.

History of Pakistan Coast Guards:

  • In order to stop the smuggling of illegal goods into and out of Pakistan, Pakistan Customs was in charge of the country's land and maritime borders until the late 1960s.
  • When Gwadar joined Pakistan in 1958, the coastline was expanded by roughly 1000 kilometres, reaching the Iranian border in the west. Since the Sea Customs was then the sole anti-smuggling organisation tasked with keeping an eye on both land-based activities and the entire coastline, the enlarged frontages made the mission of the Sea Customs even more challenging.
  • As a result, the Pakistan Coast Guards' skeleton headquarters were established in Karachi in June 1971.
  • Subsequently in October 1972, a Presidential Ordinance that later gave way to the Pakistan Coast Guards Act of 1973 officially authorised the creation of this unit.
  • Since then, the Pakistan Coast Guards have served under the Ministry of Interior as a part of the Civil Armed Forces.

Role of Pakistan Coast Guards

The mission of this force is stated in the PCG Act of 1973 as follows: "Whereas it is expedient to provide for the constitution and regulation of PCG and for special measures to effectively check smuggling of any kind across the frontiers of Pakistan in the Coastal Area of Arabian Sea and to also deal with persons acting in a manner prejudicial to the defence and security of Pakistan in that area."
